'Our schools will be truly blessed to receive these books'

FAIR supporters - you're making a difference........

This book delivery is the result of your generous donations to help rebuild the school libraries of Vanuatu.

Cast your mind back to 13 March, when Cyclone Pam roared across the islands of the Republic of Vanuatu in the South Pacific causing major devastation and displacement.

Though the National Library and Archives were little damaged, many school libraries were destroyed by the storm to the detriment of students across the archipelago.

We saw coverage on the evening news bulletins of the terrible cost of the storm and even some footage of people trying salvage wet library books by drying them in the sun.

We contacted June Bela Naviti Vanuatu, Chief Librarian of the National Library and Archives (Facebook), to see how we could help and she asked for support to help replenish the collections in school libraries.

We rallied our generous FAIR supporters asking for donations and then the American Library Association also joined us to collect funds.

Around $4000 was raised to purchase the books and now they are finally in the capital, Port Vila.

In an email sent to the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) today, June Bela Naviti Vanuatu, Chief Librarian of the National Library and Archives, said: 'Our schools will be truly blessed to receive these books.'

The photo is of our books arriving and they will be distributed by the National Library and Archives to the islands' schools.

Well done FAIR supporters.
