Freedom of Access to Information and Resources
We’re campaigning for a fair, open, democratic society where information can be accessed by everyone.
FAIR is lobbying on a number of issues which affect Australia's library and information sector including copyright law reform, cybersafety and the problems with internet filtering, digitising our nation’s history, encouraging children to read, evidence-based decisions in law, health and business, evidence-based policy making, learning at any age, qualified library staff in schools, supporting Australia's book industry and well funded public libraries.
As nominations have been flowing in, students, teachers, librarians and supporters of school libraries have been sending us some great photos, videos and other artwork.
We will be adding to this compilation as the contributions are sent to us.
Check out some of the great things that are happening in school library land. Materials are uploaded as they are supplied to FAIR.
We have sought permission to publish these photos, videos etc.
Best-selling author of more than 170 children's books, Jackie French, is this year's Children's Laureate and she's supporting our campaign!
'A library is the heart of a school, where the right book is given at the right time to exactly the right kid, and their future blossoms.
There are some Great School Libraries out there!
Nominations are pouring in for Great School Libraries.
The response has been fantastic so far - we have 140 nominations and that tally grows daily!
So keep them coming because we want to recognise amazing school libraries and the important services they provide to our schools: libraries that help children find reliable information, think critically, safely navigate the internet and find great reads.
And we're starting to get some great pictures and videos.
Teacher librarians and school library professionals inspire students every day of the term…..we want to recognise these amazing school libraries and the important services they provide to our school communities.
FAIR has joined with The Australian Library and Information Association, ALIA Schools, Australian School Library Association, Queensland School Library Association, School Library Association of NSW, School Library Association of South Australia, School Library Association of Victoria and Western Australian School Library Association to seek out these inspirational places of learning and discovery.
Are you inspired by your school library?
Stay tuned – 24 hours to go before we launch our Great School Libraries campaign...
What is it? Well we’re looking for great school libraries across Australia.
More news to come tomorrow!
FAIR supporters - you're making a difference........
This book delivery is the result of your generous donations to help rebuild the school libraries of Vanuatu.
Cast your mind back to 13 March, when Cyclone Pam roared across the islands of the Republic of Vanuatu in the South Pacific causing major devastation and displacement.
We're using vintage recipes to push for copyright reform, with Cooking for Copyright Day on Friday 31 July. We're focusing on the fact that in Australia copyright in published works lasts 70 years after the death of the creator, but for unpublished works, copyright lasts forever. This means old diaries, letters, even recipes are locked away. We're campaigning for unpublished and published works to have the same term of copyright.
Together FAIR and the American Library Association have raised $4000 in total for new books for school libraries in Vanuatu.
This has been a wonderful example of international cooperation to help support libraries in the Asia Pacific Region.
Big thanks for our American colleagues for supporting this and to all donors for their generosity.
